Five four-star generals paid a visit to president Sukarno in his official residence in Merdeka Palace, Jakarta. The generals, the chiefs of staff of the Army, Navy, Air Force and National Police plus the minister of defense were on a special mission. They were sent by Gen. Soeharto, then the real power holder of the new regime, to persuade Sukarno to officially transfer presidential power to Soeharto.

C. Java factories pollute Semarang SEMARANG: The Central Java provincial environmental impact management agency (Bapedalda) estimates that around 800 companies are contributing to the high level of pollution in Semarang. "The pollution from these companies is both solid and liquid waste as well as air pollution," head of Semarang's Bapedalda Widi Widodo said on Saturday afternoon. Widi however, declined to name the companies.

Bank Indonesia transfers ailing BII to IBRA JAKARTA (JP): Bank Indonesian transferred the ailing publicly listed Bank International Indonesia (BII) to the Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency (IBRA) as part of efforts to save the bank. "BII is now under the supervision of IBRA with the status of 'bank under reinstatement' effective July 13," the central bank and IBRA said in a joint statement late on Friday.

500 poor students still unable to find high schools JAKARTA (JP): The new school year starts this Monday, but some 500 junior high school graduates all over the capital have yet to be accepted in any school as their grades do not meet the minimum requirements for public schools. The head of the city office of the Ministry of National Education Alwi Nurdin said that out of those students, some 300 had graduated from schools in East Jakarta while the rest were from South Jakarta.
