PLN suffers Rp 15t loss in first-half JAKARTA (JP): State electricity company PT PLN suffered a net loss of Rp 14.99 trillion (US$1.3 billion) for the first half of this year compared to a net profit of Rp 720 billion in the same period of 1997. The company's consolidated financial statement for the period from January to June this year shows a foreign exchange loss of Rp 12.84 trillion, much higher than the Rp 85.56 billion loss reported in the first half of 1997.

Indocement's profit falls JAKARTA (JP): Publicly-listed cement maker PT Indocement saw its net profit fall drastically to Rp 3.3 billion (US$300,000) in the first half of this year, from Rp 262.5 billion in the corresponding period of 1997, the company said Monday. The unaudited consolidated balance sheet also showed that the company suffered foreign exchange losses amounting to Rp 3.2 trillion in the first six months of the year, the company said in a press release.

Project for skilled workers launched JAKARTA (JP): The city administration launched on Monday a labor-intensive project worth more than Rp 60 billion (US$5.45 million) for skilled workers to help ease unemployment problems in the capital. Djailani, deputy governor for welfare affairs, said after witnessing the launch that the project, run jointly with 114 non- governmental organizations, was designed to employ over 10,000 jobless people.

Doctor gets two years for illegal abortions JAKARTA (JP): The Central Jakarta District Court sentenced an obstetrician to two years in jail and fined him Rp 3 million (US$272) on Monday for illegally aborting an average of 10 to 15 babies a day. Presiding judge Abas Sumantri said the doctor, Budiman, 51, was guilty of violating Article 15 of Health Law No. 23/1993, which states that an abortion is legal only if it is necessary to save the life of the mother or the baby.
