Bomb squad continue sweep
PALEMBANG, South Sumatra: Bomb squad personnel continued their sweep on Monday of the area surrounding the Palembang air base after an unexploded World War II bomb was found in a nearby field over the weekend
"It's likely that many bombs were embedded near residential homes around the air base or Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II airport," base commander Col. Yanuardi said here Monday.
A bomb was found buried near the air base on Saturday. It is believed the device was a Japanese bomb dropped during an air strike in the 1940s.
As reported by Antara a similar bomb exploded in 1987 in the same area. It killed the person who accidentally stumbled on it.
