Three die in bus accident GROBOGAN, Central Java: An intercity bus careened off the road and hit a tree on Sunday evening, killing at least three people and leaving nine others injured. Local police chief Lt. Col. Cornelis said that the driver of the bus fled the scene and was still at large. Cornelis said the bus, on its way from Semarang to the town, was speeding when one of its tires burst and the accident occurred. The dead were all residents of Grobogan. The injured remain hospitalized.

A field survey conducted by the non-governmental organization Kompas found two yellow muntjacs were trapped and killed last July and August in the Sultan Adam forest in South Kalimantan, Antara reported. Small businesses in deep debt TANGERANG (JP): Bad debts amounting to about Rp 1.5 billion (US$200,000) have burdened 146,512 families in Tangerang since 1996, due mainly to problems in marketing their products, an official said on Monday. Yusuf Supardi, head of the local office of the National Family Planning Board, said the amount was part of Rp 9.5 billion in loans channeled to improve the welfare of local people.

Filipino fishermen to be repatriated PALU, Central Sulawesi: Six Filipino fishermen arrested for fishing in local waters are to be sent home as soon as possible, head of the local immigration office Husin Alaydrus said. They were found in the Buol Tolitoli regency, Central Sulawesi, Antara reported. Husin said they failed to show proper travel documents. One of the fishermen, Rhenante Alferez, said that their boat had been swept off course by a storm and that the engine had broken down.

RI, German scientists begin research project CILACAP, Central Java (JP): Thirty-eight scientists from Indonesia and Germany representing various disciplines started a joint three-month research project on marine geology Sunday. The study of sedimentation in the Indian Ocean is being conducted aboard the German-owned Sonne research ship. Funds for the studies until Feb. 28 are said to reach US$25,000 per day, also provided by the German government.
