Eratex's profit declines JAKARTA (JP): PT Eratex Djaja Limited, a publicly listed clothing and textile company, last year made a profit of Rp 1.9 billion (US$778,050), far lower than 1995's profit of Rp 3.1 billion, an executive said yesterday. Eratex' president Julian W. Wong said here that the 37.5 percent decline was caused by substantial increases in cotton prices and labor costs. He said that in 1996, the company's wages bill increased 26 percent.

A police sergeant at the South Jakarta Police precinct said the owner of the workshop, Darta, suffered burns in the fire which started at about 2 a.m. "It is believed that Darta forgot to extinguish his cigarette before he fell asleep," the sergeant said.

After receiving the credit card statement, we unfortunately did not check the charges made by the Arcadia Hotel, and only did so a year later by accident. State revenue from oil exports may beat target JAKARTA (JP): Favorable world market prices for Indonesian crude oil, Minas, are likely to push state earnings from oil exports above the current (1997/1998) fiscal year target, Minister of Mines and Energy, I.B. Sudjana says. Sudjana said yesterday Minas crude oil prices were US$18.78 a barrel, far higher than the price estimate. The state revenue from oil exports target in the 1997/1998 budget was based on a predicted $16.50 a barrel.

Batam inter-islands bridge JAKARTA (JP): PT Waskita Karya, a Ministry of Public Works construction company, has finished building a 365-meter-long bridge which links the Setoko and Rempang islands, near Batam island. Waskita's president, Christiawan, said yesterday that construction of the bridge, which started in October 1993 and ended last month, cost about Rp 43 billion (US$17.92 million). Comments on the cabinet changes JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto's surprise decision yesterday to make changes to his cabinet was greeted warmly by those affected. Army Chief of Staff Gen. R. Hartono will become the minister of information next week, replacing Harmoko who has been given the new post of state minister for special assignments. Lt. Gen. Wiranto will replace Hartono as the Army chief of staff.

British Gas spuds oil well JAKARTA (JP): British Gas International Indonesia (BG) announced yesterday that on May 31 it spudded Nambumbi-1, an exploration well located in the Muturi concession in Irian Jaya's Kepala Burung region. BG said the Muturi block was held under a 1992 production- sharing contract with state oil company, Pertamina.

RP to keep tariff on refined sugar MANILA (Reuter): The Philippines will keep a 65 percent tariff imposed on refined sugar from neighboring Southeast Asian countries as it prepares for another round of fresh importation, a senior official said yesterday. Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) chief Wilson Gamboa said Manila would remove the 35 percent tariff rebate on refined sugar from Southeast Asia starting July 1.

Eterindo to set up S$75m petrochemical plant JAKARTA (JP): Publicly listed petrochemical manufacturer PT Eterindo Wahanatama plans to build a new plant with investment of about US$75 million in Gresik, East Java. SMART to open huge palm estate in Berau JAKARTA (JP): Cooking oil and margarine producer PT Sinar Mas Agro Resources and Technology Corporation (PT SMART Corp) will invest Rp 350 billion (US$145.8 million) to open a 40,000 hectare oil palm estate in Berau, East Kalimantan this year, the company said yesterday. Company vice president Tan Siaw Liang said the land would be cleared later this year and planting would start next year.
