Border crossers did not vote

JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: About 3,000 Indonesians living in Papua New Guinea did not vote in the May 29 election.

"Most of them crossed the border from Irian Jaya, Indonesia's easternmost province, and have lived in the neighboring country for a long time," Indonesian Ambassador Abinowo Mukmin told Antara here Wednesday.

He said they could not vote because they had not had Indonesian identity cards.

"Besides, the government of Papua New Guinea has decided that the Indonesian border crossers can vote in its general election scheduled for June 14," Mukmin said.
