HK lowers income target from tourism JAKARTA (JP): Hong Kong has lowered its target for foreign exchange receipts from foreign tourists this year on an expected drop in foreign arrivals. The Hong Kong Tourist Association (HKTA) said here yesterday that tourist arrivals this year would drop 10 percent compared to 1996 due to the currency crisis in most Southeast Asian countries.

The tariffs of other countries expressed in U.S. dollars have not been changed with the depreciation of the rupiah. Thus, all data except those for Indonesia are wrong in the five columns with the heading "USD Rp 3,200". The whole comparison misses its point.

Merapi to stay alert to the possibility that lahar, which has been accumulating on top of the crater, may spill over causing floods during the rainy season. Head of the Mt. Merapi section of the Directorate of Volcanology, Mas Atje Purbawinata, said 1,500 cubic meters of lahar had collected in the crater. Lahar is composed of volcanic debris and water.

JSX composite index hits four-year low JAKARTA (JP): The Jakarta Stock Exchange (JSX) composite index, the main gauge for local share prices, nose-dived yesterday through the psychological 400-point barrier hitting a four-year low, stockbrokers said. The Indonesian rupiah trailed the fall in the stock market and continued to drop yesterday despite market intervention by Bank Indonesia, the central bank, said currency dealers.

Four disco patrons imprisoned JAKARTA (JP): The West Jakarta District Court sentenced four discotheque patrons yesterday an average of three months in prison for consuming Ecstasy pills. The male defendants were identified as Erick Pariosa Setiawan, 20, and Asep Subhi, 18, and the females were Yulia Suryani Dewi, 28, and Sari Benah, 40. U.S. adds credit to RI WASHINGTON (Reuters): The U.S. Agriculture Department said Tuesday that it is adding corn products to the list of food items that Indonesia and the Philippines can buy under the GSM-102 export credit guarantee program. USDA also added fruit juices to the lists for both countries and ice cream to the list for Indonesia and pulses to the list for the Philippines. Corn products include corn flour, corn grits, corn flakes corn starch, corn meal and corn gluten feed.

Garment factory workers strike JAKARTA (JP): About 600 workers of a garment factory in east Depok went on strike yesterday, demanding their wages which have been suspended for the last three consecutive months. The strike started at 7:15 a.m. on the grounds of PT Busan Surya Jaya on Jl. H. Dimun. According to the workers, most of whom are women, the company's management had broken their promises many times to pay the employees.
