One million tree drive to be launched

BANJARMASIN, South Kalimantan: The provincial administration will soon launch a "one million fruit tree planting drive", a campaign aiming to clean the environment after the haze that has shrouded the region for months.

Governor Hasan Aman will launch the drive on Dec. 2 which coincides with the 37th National Natural Conservation and Regreening Day.

Antara quoted the head of the environmental section of the provincial administration Armain Janit as saying that many environmental problems that began several years ago have become critical and are endangering people's lives.

"One of the best ways to protect people's lives is to plant fruit trees," Janit said.

South Kalimantan has a population of more than three million people and at least 750,000 houses. The movement will be carried out by planting at least three fruit trees per house, said Janit.

"The more tress we plant the healthier we become," he added.
