Sulawesi 'perahu' in Paris UJUNGPANDANG, South Sulawesi: A traditional wooden boat from South Sulawesi, known as Perahu Sande, will be exhibited at an international show in the Natural History National Museum in Paris next year, Antara reported. The nine-meter boat, which can sail at a speed of up to 30-40 kilometers an hour, is widely used by local fishermen.

Soeharto inaugurates Sheraton Solo hotel JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto inaugurated the Sheraton Solo yesterday, the first five-star hotel in Surakarta, Central Java. The 114-room hotel is managed by ITT Sheraton Asia Pacific, an affiliate of the Boston-based ITT Sheraton hotel chain. The US$22-million Sheraton Solo, located on a 3.5-hectare plot, was developed by PT Hotel Anomsolo Saranatama, which is controlled by Agus Sugiarto and Soeharto's youngest son, Hutomo (Tommy) Mandala Putra.

Singaporeans hurt by trees MATARAM, West Nusa Tenggara: Five Singaporeans were hurt Friday when several trees fell on them near the Singanggila Bayan waterfall in West Lombok, Antara reported. Two of them had to be treated at Mataram General Hospital, the news agency said. They were identified as Teh Lay Wah, 31, who sustained head and wrist injuries and Koay Phail Hooi, 27, who suffered a head injury. The other three tourists were discharged after being treated at the hospital.

Food products fail test DENPASAR, Bali: The Denpasar Food and Drug Agency said 71 food and beverage products failed the health test in 1996. The agency surveyed 680 samples during the year, Antara reported. This is an improvement from 1995, when the agency found that 141 out of 1,211 products surveyed had failed the test, the agency's chief, I Made Kawi, said Saturday. The samples were taken randomly from shops and supermarkets.

Citibank Visa Card I recently got poor service on my Citibank Visa Card Product. It started in August when I got my monthly statement from Citibank. I noted there were two expenses, Rp 824,000 and Rp 566,500, dated Aug. 28, 1996 in the name of Istana Elektronik Komunik (IEK). Realizing the statement was incorrect, I sent a letter to Citibank rejecting the two expenses because as I have never bought anything from that store.

Fire razes 200 houses JAKARTA (JP): Three-hundred families lost their homes after fire razed about 200 houses in Pulogadung, East Jakarta, late Saturday. Many of the houses were two stories. No casualties were reported. Neighborhood chief Baud Soekarno said yesterday the fire in Jati subdistrict started at 7:30 p.m. Firefighters managed to put out the fire at around 2 a.m. He said an exploding stove caused the fire. The fire hit two kampongs, Poncol Atas and Poncol Bawah.

A witness said Supriyadi was the victim of a student brawl which occurred around 4 p.m. He was trampled in front of the Wisma Arion building. City to have illumination agency JAKARTA (JP): The Jakarta Legislative Council passed a bill Friday on the setting up of the city's illumination agency to accelerate the installation of street lamps in the five mayoralties. Five face trial for reporter's beating DILI, East Timor: The Dili Prosecutors Office presented the dossiers of five men Saturday to the local district court who are suspected of beating a journalist for a Jakarta-based magazine last month, Antara said. Gaudensius Mau, the Dili correspondent for Tiras magazine, was beaten by a group of men on Nov. 17. He sustained severe injuries.

Dharmala Rp 80 (US$33.9 million) billion commercial paper program was initially rated in March. The A-4 rating was assigned on the commercial paper with a moderate investment risk while the B rating was given to the paper with a high investment risk.
