Vietnam raises air fares HANOI (AFP): Vietnam Airlines has raised its prices on domestic flights for Vietnamese, narrowing the gap in prices for tickets paid by foreigners, a company official said yesterday. Prices for Vietnamese were raised 30 percent on July 10 on the main domestic route between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to 900,000 dong (US$82) one way and 1.6 million dong ($145) for a round trip.

Former forced laborers swindled SAMARINDA, East Kalimantan: Hundreds of former romusha, the term for forced laborers under Japanese occupation, fell victim to a man claiming to be able to help them obtain war compensation. Identified only as GT, the man had made 289 former romusha pay between Rp 30,000 (approximately US$ 13) to Rp 50,000, promising that he would obtain Rp 21 million for each of them.

Australia and tourism I was appalled to discover during a recent visit to the Australian Embassy that Indonesians visiting Australia for vacations have to demonstrate they have sufficient funds to leave that country, or they must have proof of a sponsorship by others to support their departure. Branch chief Sulistijo said yesterday that an additional provider system is being established in Cilincing and is expected to be operational in December. The existing capacity of 4,000 liter per second serves 115,000 families, or approximately 60 percent of North Jakarta's households.

Recently I witnessed a very unpleasant incident on a bus leaving from the Kampung Rambutan terminal to Pasar Baru, Jakarta. Next to a young lady sat a young man. The bus began picking up passengers and quite soon it was too crowded to even breathe. Then the young man lit up a clove cigarette, totally indifferent to his surroundings.

Lawyers remind court that Permadi is Moslem YOGYAKARTA (JP): Lawyers defending soothsayer Permadi Satrio Wiwoho yesterday took offense at an accusation by government prosecutors that their client is not a Moslem, but a follower of a Javanese cult known as Kepercayaan terhadap Tuhan Yang Maha Esa. The lawyers told the Sleman District Court in Yogyakarta, where Permadi is being tried on charges of blasphemy against Islam, that the accusation "is dangerous" and politically sensitive.
