Students row during strike

SALATIGA, Central Java: Hundreds of students from the troubled Satya Wacana Christian University held yet another strike yesterday against Rector John JOI Ihalauw who has, to date, dismissed dozens of teachers.

Demanding the resignation of Ihalauw, the students also vowed to maintain their boycott of any academic activities held by the rector and the other administrators.

Some of the protesters also said that they wanted to meet with Dutch Ambassador P.R. Brouwer, who reportedly plans to visit the campus, to deliver their grievances. They will also ask his office to audit his country's financial assistance to the university.

When the students were about to march to the rector's office, another group of students, demanding an end to the strike and the resumption of learning strikes, came from the opposite direction.

Using megaphones, the two groups then began to argue. The row ended after a delegation from several churches, visiting to meet with the rector and campus administrators, separated the arguing students. (har/swe)
