Bank NISP net profit up 29% JAKARTA: Bank NISP announced on Thursday that its 2002 net profit increased by 29 percent to Rp 92.36 billion (US$10.39 million) over the same period in 2001. The medium-sized bank said net interest income increased to Rp 265.78 billion from Rp 200.27 billion, while non-interest income rose to Rp 89.45 billion from Rp 68.26 billion. NISP said that total operating expenses jumped to Rp 222.22 billion from Rp 174.55 billion the previous year.

JP/ /Across Riau regency to repair schools PEKANBARU, Riau: The regency of Indragiri Hulu in Riau has set aside Rp 5 billion (about US$561,000) to rebuild schools that were damaged during recent flooding. Indragiri Regent Raja Thamsir Rachman said his office was still counting the number of damaged schools in the regency. Preliminary figures put the number at 43, from elementary schools to high schools.

Representing Indonesia was Minister of Defense Matori Abdul Djalil, while Brunei was represented by Minister of Education Haji Awang Abdul Aziz. The agreement included joint military exercises and personnel exchanges, Aziz said.

New vehicle sales rise 8.1% by March JAKARTA: New vehicle sales in Indonesia rose 8.1 percent on month to 29,297 units in March, the car assemblers' association Gaikindo said on Thursday. Of the total, commercial vehicles accounted for 26,676 units in March, up 6.1 percent from 25,133 in February, Gaikindo said. Passenger car sales - a barometer of consumer confidence - also rose, to 2,621 units from 1,978 units in February.
