Attack separatists
Attack separatists
From Koran Tempo
Recently, the Indonesian Military (TNI) Commander Gen. Endriartono was angered by the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) for what he said were frequent violations of the Indonesia-GAM peace accord. Also, recently the Free Papua Organization attacked and robbed the arsenal of the Jayawijaya military district command post near Jayapura and got away with dozens of rifles and ammunition. Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ryamizard Ryacudu promptly ordered the stamping out of all acts of separatism.
It seems that such developments have taken place within a grand scenario, so that it is not enough to handle them only by making strong statements or bluffing. The TNI should exercise its power more extensively and take stern measures against all armed separatist movements. Otherwise, it may be accused of allowing those groups to fester.
Therefore, TNI's strong remarks should be followed up with massive attacks like the ones launched by the coalition (U.S. et al) forces on Iraq, because such moves are permissible within a sovereign state, at least to stop provocative acts for the maintenance of domestic security.
