RI's forex reserves down JAKARTA (JP): Bank Indonesia said on Tuesday that the country's gross foreign exchange reserves declined by US$30.1 million, to $28.64 billion, as of the end of June compared to the previous week's level. The central bank said in a weekly indicator report, the decline was primarily due to repayment of the government's overseas debts. Gross foreign exchange reserves are net foreign exchange reserves plus outstanding foreign exchange contracts.

Garuda resumes Fukuoka flight TOKYO (DPA): Garuda Indonesia on Tuesday resumed regular service between Bali's capital Denpasar and Japan's southwestern city of Fukuoka with the arrival of the first such flight at Fukuoka airport, an airline spokesman said. Three round-trip flight are scheduled each week, the spokesman said. The route was suspended in May 1998, mainly because of Indonesia's political instability. Tuesday's first flight, an Airbus A33, arrived at around 8 a.m. at Fukuoka airport.

Government raises excise tax on cigarettes JAKARTA (JP): The government raised minimum cigarette retail prices by between Rp 12.5 and Rp 25 per cigarette, effective from July 1, in a bid to obtain larger excise tax revenue this year, Director General for Customs and Excise Tax Permana Agung said on Tuesday. Permana said that the higher excise revenue was needed to help curb the 2001 state budget deficit to a safer level of around 3.7 percent of gross domestic product.
