Elderly man refuses to descend from tower JAKARTA (JP): Residents of the Gang Buncit V slum area in South Jakarta on Tuesday attempted to convince a 60-year-old man to climb down from a high-voltage electricity tower. The residents said Muhammad Sidik, who according to his wife is mentally ill, climbed to the top of the 30-meter-high tower on Monday evening.

Seven years sought for drug producing JAKARTA (JP): A prosecutor demanded on Tuesday the Central Jakarta District Court sentence defendant Yosep Agustian Chendra to seven years in jail for allegedly producing drugs. "The defendant has violated article 60 of the 1997 Law on Psychotropic Substances," prosecutor Alan Widati said in a hearing presided over by judge Marni Emmy. The article carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in jail and a maximum fine of Rp 200 million (US$27,027).

RI exports 5m tons of paper SURABAYA (JP): The Association of Pulp and Paper Producers reported on Tuesday that the country produced 8.5 million tons of paper last year, of which 5 million was exported. The association's chairman, Muhammad Mansur, said Indonesia's pulp production reached 5.1 million tons in 1996, of which 1.1 million was exported. Mansur said the pulp and paper business was promising because of favorable international prices and the potential for an increase in domestic demand.

RI to host Asian athletics c'ship JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia will host the Asian track and field championship for the third time at the Madya athletic stadium here from Aug. 2 to Aug. 5, the Indonesian Amateur Athletics Association (PASI) chairman Bob Hasan said on Monday. Bob said that the 43 events would be featured at the championship, which would be attended by top Asian athletes from 48 countries as members of the Asian Amateur Athletic Association (AAAA).
