Police burn contraband

JAKARTA (JP): Ciputat Police in South Jakarta destroyed on Tuesday 151.3 kilograms of dry marijuana leaves, confiscated from five suspected drug dealers on Jl. Nyai Dasimah in the Sawah Lama village of Ciputat, Tangerang, in December last year.

South Jakarta police chief Col. Nono Suprijono said that the Criminal Code Procedure states that law enforcement agencies should destroy any dangerous or poisonous goods seized as soon as we arrest the suspects.

He cited Article 45 of the Criminal Code Procedure and Article 53 of Law No. 5/1997 on psychotropic drugs.

The law, however, stresses that police or other law enforcement officials are required to destroy drugs seven days after they confiscate them.

Ciputat police chief, Capt. Helvi Assegaf, identified the five suspects as Sunardi bin Rajali, Samsyul Bahri bin Ruslan, Rahmadi bin Sakuat, Anhar bun Ramli and Husaini bin Sulaiman.

"Anhar and Husaini were each shot in the leg, when they tried to flee during the raid," he said. (ylt)
