2,500 workers rally over wage increase

SEMARANG: At least 2,500 mostly female workers of jamu producer PT Nyonya Meneer held a demonstration on Tuesday, demanding wage increases and welfare improvement.

Gathering in front of the local council building, they also called on the company to include them in the social security program of PT Jamsostek and allow them freedom to unionize.

The rally ended peacefully after company executive Charles Ong promised to fulfill their demands by April.

"The company's financial condition can probably accommodate their demands," Charles said without elaborating. (har/jun)
