Newcrest closes gold mine on Halmahera MELBOURNE (Dow Jones): Unrest on the Indonesian island of Halmahera has again forced Australia's Newcrest Mining Ltd. to shut its Gosowong gold mine and evacuate staff. Some 300 people have been shifted to Manado, since violence escalated on the island last week. Eight people died and another 18 were injured on Halmahera last Friday and Saturday in religious clashes, according to the official Antara news agency.

RI continues to import NZ milk PURWOKERTO, Central Java (JP): Indonesia imports about 30 percent of the country's milk demand from New Zealand due to the shortage of local milk production, a senior official said here on Tuesday. Strong waves destroy houses MATARAM, West Nusa Tenggara: Strong waves have destroyed 24 houses in Melayu Bangsal fishing hamlet here over the last two days, at a time when the town is still counting the losses from last weeks riots. No fatalities were reported, but the head of Central Ampenan subdistrict, Sirajudin, said on Monday that at least 117 people were left homeless following the disaster. He said they were being sheltered in the homes of neighbors and relatives.

Over 3,000 ostriches killed PURWOKERTO, Central Java (JP): The government has had more than 3,000 ostriches exterminated in a bid to curb the spread of anthrax in Purwakarta, West Java. Director general of animal husbandry Sofyan Sudrajat said here on Monday the extermination of the large birds was a prompt and effective move in combating the anthrax. The disease was reported at an ostrich farm belonging to PT Cisada Kema Sari in Purwakarta last December, killing at least 300 of the birds.

Tjandra on Tuesday, one of the defendants in the Rp 546 billion (US$78 million) Bank Bali scandal, and regranted him city arrest status. Djoko is one of the suspects being detained by the Attorney General's Office for his alleged involvement in the scandal. The Office had granted him the city arrest status from Nov. 9 to Dec. 27., and then extended it from Dec. 28 to Jan. 16.

RI forex reserves rise JAKARTA (JP): Bank Indonesia said on Tuesday that the country's net foreign exchange reserves rose by US$33 million to $16.7 billion as of Jan. 21 from $16.67 billion a week earlier. The central bank said in its weekly report that the increase was due to oil export earnings. It said the country's gross forex reserves rose to $27.65 billion from $27.62 billion in the previous week. The bank also said that base money dropped by Rp 4.19 trillion to Rp 86.12 trillion.
