RP extends commitment to ASEAN liquidity facility MANILA (Reuters): Philippine central bank governor Gabriel Singson has agreed to a seventh extension of the ASEAN swap arrangement in Tokyo, a statement from the central bank said yesterday. The extension is for one year from Aug. 5, 1998. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations swap arrangement is a facility providing short-term liquidity for temporary balance of payments needs of participating countries.

More coffee deals may be on brewing SINGAPORE (Reuters): Indonesian farmers have started to offer more coffee beans as their harvest begins to peak and more deals could be struck in coming weeks, traders said yesterday. In Vietnam, another main Asian coffee supplier, traders said there were still between 20,000 and 30,000 tons of beans for export, but activities had slowed and the market would stay quiet until after October, when the next harvesting kicks in.

Women in Indonesia We all know what happened during the May riots: wild attacks on banks, supermarkets and shops, followed by a brutal assault on women. It is not important whether these victims were Chinese- Indonesians, Arab-Indonesians or foreign women. The fact remains that far more than 100 women were humiliated and tortured and the government did nothing at all to stop it. I can mention Citibank, Hong Kong Bank and Standard Chartered Bank which have used phone banking for their customers' satisfaction. Now, a lot of fund owners are switching to foreign banks because they have no confidence in the national banks, although the government guarantees all kinds of savings placed in any national bank. Citibank has been operating phone banking for quite some time. Its service is satisfactory.

Two equity producers between them sold 300,000 barrels of August Minas to a Japanese refiner at a premium of 60 cents per barrel to the ICP, the highest premium for Minas seen this year, traders said. For July, Minas had traded only as high as ICP +20 cents.

The government funding it receives amounts to Rp 1,400 (10 cents U.S.) per day per inmate. It was previously supported mostly by ethnic Chinese people. The Ministry of Information's director general of radio, television and film, Ishadi SK, said yesterday that most of the 800 cinemas catered to poorer audiences by screening locally made films.
