Two live bullets found at Cenderawasih Univeristy
JAKARTA (JP): A fact-finding team led by Irian Jaya Military Police Commander Lt. Col. Armen B. found two live bullets yesterday at the Cenderawasih University campus.
One was found in a stack of books in the building where elementary school teachers are trained, while the other was found in the office of one of the teaching staff, Antara reported.
The fact-finding team, whose members include local military and police personnel and a number of the university's lecturers and students, has been trying to determine the direction from which the bullets were fired.
They have also questioned several students who claim to have seen the shootings that happened on July 3, 1998 shortly after the conclusion of a free-speech forum on the campus.
The victims were Cenderawasih University student Steven Suripaty and Kotaraja junior high school student Korina Onim. Both are still in the hospital.
One intelligence officer was also beaten during the incident. He later died.
Armen said that the team would continue to search for new evidence and that their findings would eventually be submitted to the Irian Jaya military commander.
"So we really have not yet come to any conclusion whatsoever about the case," he said.
Cenderawasih University's coordinator of the fact-finding team, Elly Lewerisa, said the university representatives on the team consisted of five lecturers and two students. (mds)
