The idea of having the badge came from head of the City Crime Investigation Directorate Col. Nurfauzi soon after he received a Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) badge from detective Ted Ball, who was here recently for further investigation of the triple murder.

KL merchant bank acquired KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Bank Simpanan Nasional, Malaysia's soon-to-be-listed national savings bank, yesterday took over Rakyat Merchant Bankers Bhd., which was declared insolvent last year by the central Bank Negara. Bank Simpanan said it was now negotiating to sell to a local commercial bank a 30 percent stake in the insolvent merchant bank, to be known as BSN Merchant Bank Bhd. when it begins operation in August, officials said.

Former U.S. bases tested for waste MANILA (Reuter): Former U.S. air and naval bases in the Philippines will be tested for toxic waste, a senior Philippine government official said yesterday. "We're scheduled to conduct testing in July and September," Health Secretary Jaime Galvez Tan said. Tan said water-sampling will be conducted at 14 sites inside the Clark economic zone and 20 sites inside the Subic Free port area. Clark is the former site of a U.S. air base, while Subic was a naval base.

'Ariane' to launch Malaysian satellite LE BOURGET, France (AFP): The European space rocket Ariane has been chosen to launch Malaysia's second satellite, MEASAT-2, in October next year, officials said yesterday. The rocket's makers Arianespace and Malaysian consortium Binariang Sdn Bhd signed a contract for the launch in the presence of Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, they said. The amount of the contract was not revealed.

RP reserves hit $7.26b MANILA (AFP): The Philippines' gross international reserves hit US$7.26 billion as of June 14, the Central Bank said in a statement issued yesterday. This figure represents a new high for the year and is a 3.8- percent improvement over the $6.995 billion in gross international reserves recorded at the end of 1994. The Central Bank attributed this to their "active participation" in the foreign exchange market which has been experiencing large foreign exchange inflows.

"He appears to be a responsible man. He surrendered to the police upon his arrival from abroad," Chief of the Brebes police precinct Lt. Col. Sukarji said. Edi was in China on business when the factory exploded on Monday, leaving at least 19 workers dead and 49 others injured.
