Fireworks boss reports to police

BREBES, Central Java: Edi Sukamto, owner of a fireworks
factory which exploded early this week, reported to the local
police upon his arrival from China yesterday.

"He appears to be a responsible man. He surrendered to the
police upon his arrival from abroad," Chief of the Brebes police
precinct Lt. Col. Sukarji said.

Edi was in China on business when the factory exploded on
Monday, leaving at least 19 workers dead and 49 others injured.

Sukarji said Edi will be questioned after he recovers from
shock over the tragedy. "His wife is still in the hospital due to
injuries sustained in the explosion," he told Antara.

The factory owner has committed himself to paying Rp 1 million
for each of the victims and has promised to cover all of the
medical cost for those injured.

Eight workers are still in the hospital due to serious
injuries. (rms)
