Philippine men take basketball gold By Primastuti Handayani JAKARTA (JP): The Philippines mapped out its territory as the regional strongman in basketball after its men's team beat Malaysia 96-86 for the gold yesterday. Thailand demolished Indonesia's hope for the bronze after beating the host team 68-57. But Malaysia saved some of its disappointment by taking the women's gold after eliminating Thailand 67-58.

The biggest battle was fought between Thailand and Malaysia, which took seven of the eight medals in track and field. Supriati finished in four minutes 21.5 seconds, just inside the record of 4:22.25 held by Myanmar's Htwe Khin Khin.

Blood donors spread AIDS HANOI (AFP): At least 100 people have been infected with AIDS in Vietnam after undergoing transfusions using blood from HIV positive donors, an official said yesterday. About 200 blood donors carrying the Human Immune Deficiency Virus (HIV), which can lead to Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, (AIDS), were detected across the country, said Do Trung Phan, head of the Health Ministry's Haemotology and Blood Transfusion Institute.

PENCAK SILAT VICTORIES: JP/Arief Suhardiman Vietnamese women denied Indonesia a clean sweep on the final day of the traditional martial art pencak silat competition yesterday. Trinh Thi Mui, Nguyen Thi Hong and Dang Thi Huy were the only non-Indonesian champions as the host favorites romped home with 11 gold medals. The victories took Indonesia's gold medal tally to 17 after the squad gained all of the six classes in the newly introduced non-fighting event on Thursday.

RI confirmed Games winner JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia regained the overall SEA Games medal title yesterday but the gold it coveted most, in men's soccer, slipped through its grasp in an agonizing penalty shootout. Success did come in badminton, pencak silat, the indoor and beach volleyball courts, and softball. It ended yesterday with 189 golds, 106 more than its nearest rival Thailand. Only 10 events remain to be decided today, the final day of competition.

Brunei ready for 1999 SEA Games JAKARTA (AP): After years of swelling ever bigger, the Southeast Asia Games are likely to be scaled back considerably when tiny Brunei plays host in 1999. Brunei sports official Adina Othman said the next SEA Games are likely to have between 16 and 20 sports, compared with the 34-sport extravaganza put on this year by Indonesia. "We expect the games to be much smaller," she said.

Sumatran rhino to give birth in zoo CINCINNATI (AP): Seven-year-old Emi could become the first Sumatran rhinoceros in 108 years to give birth in captivity. "The confirmed pregnancy at the Cincinnati Zoo is a milestone of epochal significance for the survival of this venerable species," said Tom Foose of the International Rhino Foundation. Zoo Director Ed Maruska announced Emi's pregnancy on Thursday. The last recorded pregnancy of a Sumatran rhino in captivity was at the Calcutta Zoo in 1889.

More hairy victory moments JAKARTA (JP): Victors doing funny things to their hair seems to be a trend at these Games. First came Vissanu Sopanich. He had his head shaved almost as soon as he crossed the finish line after winning the men's track 100m. This was eclipsed yesterday by the Indonesian men's indoor volleyball team. After it won, all the team members sprayed their hair red and white, the colors of the national flag. The surprised crowd of 10,000 stood up and cheered the gesture.
