Bumpy road to a 'multicultural' New Zealand
Bumpy road to a 'multicultural' New Zealand JAKARTA (JP): It was a sunny, but puzzling May morning at the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute. Signs pointed toward the main entry, but other notices declared the site was closed due to "inconvenience". Behind the gate were two big women in old jackets. One asked, "I'm Double, she's Trouble -- are you for our cause or for tourism?" "Well, both," I said, thinking this was part of the show.

'4848' taxis: One tire in the junkyard?
'4848' taxis: One tire in the junkyard? By Johannes Simbolon JAKARTA (JP): Is the Bandung-based 4848 taxi company obsolete after decades of fame and service? Not if Irawan Saringi, the company's owner, can help it. But, judging by the fact that Taman Mini Indonesia Indah's Transportation Museum has reportedly asked for the company's first taxi, a modified 1957 Chevrolet pick-up, 4848 may be a thing of the past.

Wianta broadens language, content of abstract art
Wianta broadens language, content of abstract art By Jean Couteau DENPASAR (JP): The international image of Bali owes much to painting. But this image is, paradoxically, the source of the painters, and particularly Balinese painters. The role artists play in the creation of the myth of Bali as "the island of the gods" is, sadly, more important than their contribution to the world of painting.

Pure music with no frills at Jamz jazz club
Pure music with no frills at Jamz jazz club By Lela Pello JAKARTA (JP): Squeezing through the wood doors, you feel you are about to enter a dark but convivial wine cellar. Instead, as your eyes adjust, you find you're at the main bar on the upper level of Jamz. Following the hostess' greeting arm to the main seating area, you find neon lighted stairs to further guide you down to the lower level. I comfortably slid onto a wooden bench reminiscent of those found at Oktoberfest in Germany.

Taxi drivers' behavior
Taxi drivers' behavior I take Mr. Adwani S.L.'s letter (May 2, 1995) as a starting point to further protest the behavior of Jakarta's taxi drivers. More and more often, it happens that before taking in a passenger, a taxi driver will first ask the destination. If it's not considered convenient, the taxi driver will refuse to "do his job" and leave the passenger on the sidewalk. Indonesia is promoting tourism but its taxi drivers certainly don't leave a strong first impression with tourists.
