Passing away gracefully: Prajudi's last collection By Dini S. Djalal JAKARTA (JP): Fashion shows are often lighthearted occasions, but last week's Trend 1996 show provoked tears and contemplation. The death of designer Prajudi Admodirdjo, an integral member of the show's organizers, the Indonesian Fashion Designers Council (IPMI), shocked the fashion world to its senses. That the show was wonderful is a testimony to Prajudi's legacy.

Kemang's bookstore swaps used books for baskets JAKARTA (JP): There are few shops where you can swap books for baskets but the Maharani bookstore in the expatriate ghetto of Kemang is one. Opposite Chic's Mart on Jalan Kemang Selatan, South Jakarta, this hole-in-the-wall shop holds more than 3,000 secondhand books for sale, or swap. Maharani's owner, Dewiyanti Elizabeth, also has a cane shop, so baskets line the footpath in front of the bookstore.

1996 trends show nostalgia for 1960s chic JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Fashion Designer's Association (AAPMI) staged a similar Trend Show, called Tendance 96, the day after IPMI's show. Is competition heating up between the two organizations? Designers declined to comment on the rivalry, but IPMI's efforts far out staged its competitors. Presentation played an important role in IPMI's dominance.

All three gold medals at stake yesterday went to Indonesia, bringing the rowing tally to seven golds. They grabbed their first four on Friday to help Indonesia maintain some of its former dazzle at the nine-day sporting event which will conclude today.

Indonesia loses overall champion title JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia has fallen far short of its goal of becoming the overall champion of the 18th Southeast Asian Games in Chiang Mai, Thailand, according to contingent spokesman Ishadi. He calculated that Indonesia would only be able to collect 85 gold medals, or 80 percent of its target of 99. Indonesia had collected 59 gold, 48 silver and 68 bronze medals as of Friday.
