Wynne out for revenge against Fuda

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

Local hopeful Wynne Prakusya will have the chance to get her
own back against top seeded Ryoko Fuda of Japan on Friday in the
US$25,000 Jakarta ITF Women's Open.

The fifth seed, one of three local players into the last
eight, defeated Taiwan's Hwang I-Hsuan 6-4, 6-4 in the hard court
tournament at Hilton Hotel, Central Jakarta, on Thursday.

The 24 year old from Surakarta will play Fuda, currently 175th
in the world, in Friday's quarterfinals. The 19-year-old from
Kobe fought off a strong challenge from Thai Wilawan Choptang in
the first set to come through 7-6 (5), 6-1.

"I want to avenge my loss to her in the Thailand Open in
October," Wynne, whose ranking rose to 277 from 290 on Monday,
said of her 7-6 (3), 6-2 loss to Fuda in qualifying in Bangkok.

Both women have enjoyed strong years. Wynne, who has become
the country's number one in the extended absence of Angelique
Widjaja due to injury, won ITF challengers in Tarakan, Ho Chi
Minh City and St. Joseph, Missouri, as well as spearheading the
national team's defeat of Puerto Rico in the Fed Cup.

Wynne was joined in the quarterfinals by Fed Cup teammate Ayu
Fani Damayanti, who upset second seed Chan Yung-Jan of Chinese
Taipei 6-2, 6-1.

Chan, ranked 210, did not put up much of a fight against
teenager Ayu, ranked 484th in the most recent WTA rankings, after
suffering from a fever for several days, Antara news service
reported.

Ayu, who turns 17 on Nov. 29, plays Chan's seventh seeded
compatriot Chuang Chia Jung, a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Japan's Remi
Tezuka.

Local wildcard Lavinia Tananta, who scored a huge upset on
Wednesday with her defeat of Austrian third seed Tina Schiechtl,
ranked 930 spots higher than her, continued her winning ways on
Thursday.

Lavinia, who turned 18 on Nov. 3, beat compatriot Patricia
Soesilo 6-2, 6-2. She meets Thai sixth seed Montinee Thangphong,
a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Indonesian Septi Mende.

"Of course I am disappointed about losing, but I felt I played
well, it was just she played a little better. Her shots always
landed right on the line, making it very difficult for me," said
Septi, who joins Wynne, Ayu and California-based Romana
Tedjakusuma on the team for the upcoming Southeast Asian Games in
the Philippines.

Another local to lose on Thursday was Sandy Gumulya, who was
defeated 6-3, 6-1 by Slovakian fourth seed Kristina Czafikova.

The Slovak will meet Norway's eighth seeded Karoline
Borgensen, who was an easy 6-2, 6-1 winner of England's Jessica
Jackson.
