Garut — Indonesia’s Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi has reminded mudik travellers to use main routes that have been verified as safe from potential natural disasters whilst avoiding travel during rainy conditions throughout the 2026 Lebaran exodus period.

“We are promoting this to travellers so that when choosing their routes, they select safe routes,” Dudy told journalists following a working visit to oversee compensation provision for delman (horse-drawn carriage) drivers in Garut Regency, West Java, on Saturday.

He stated that the government has made various preparations to ensure the safety and smooth flow of traffic for mudik travellers during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr occasion.

The central government has coordinated with various parties, including regional authorities, to map which areas along mudik routes are disaster-prone zones. He indicated that mapping natural disaster-prone areas along routes that will be heavily used by mudik vehicles will serve as information to encourage the public to be more cautious and remain vigilant against natural disaster threats.

“We are instructing regional authorities to map disaster-prone locations,” he said.

He added that mudik travellers need not only know safe routes from natural disasters but can also consider travel timing by checking current weather information before beginning their journey.

Such preparations through weather condition checks, according to him, represent steps to minimise risk and disruptions during mudik travel.

“When planning to travel, it is also advisable to choose days when rain is unlikely, and so forth, and not to force oneself if conditions do not permit,” he said.
