Trains Gain Popularity: Padang–Pariaman and Subang Passenger Numbers Rise in Early 2026
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — The increase in train passengers in the first quarter of 2026 indicates that transportation access is becoming closer and facilitating public mobility in various areas.
Throughout the first quarter of 2026, the KA Pariaman Ekspres service recorded 382,748 passengers, a 10.16% growth compared to the same period the previous year, which reached 347,459 customers.
“This increase reflects the increasingly high mobility of the public, while also showing that short-distance journeys are becoming part of daily routines or weekend activities,” said KAI Vice President of Public Relations Anne Purba in an official statement on Sunday (19/4/2026).
The KA Pariaman Ekspres service covers the Pauh Lima–Padang–Naras route with round trips of approximately 75 kilometres. Since the implementation of the 2025 train schedule (Gapeka 2025), the operational frequency has been increased to five round trips per day.
“With an affordable fare of Rp 5,000, this service is a practical and economical transportation alternative for daily needs or recreational trips,” Anne continued.
Along the journey, the railway line runs parallel to the coastal area. Passengers can enjoy views of the open sea, rows of coconut trees, and community activities along the beach, especially when approaching the Pariaman area.
Upon arrival in Pariaman, Gandoriah Beach, located not far from the station, becomes one of the favourite destinations. Visitors can stroll along the beachfront, enjoy local cuisine such as sala lauak, and spend time with family.
“KA Pariaman Ekspres has become part of the public’s journeys, both for routine activities and when wanting to enjoy weekend time,” said Anne.
“This short journey offers a different experience on each route.”
Anne added that KAI continues to evaluate services by listening to customer feedback and adjusting to current travel needs.
“For the public who want to fill the weekend in a simple way, this journey can be a choice,” Anne concluded.
“From the city to the coast, the trip feels concise, with a memorable experience.”
The numbers increased to 8,488 customers in 2023, then 12,430 in 2024, 12,847 in 2025, and reached 16,110 customers in the first quarter of 2026.
“A similar increase is also seen in the number of customers alighting at that station,” said Anne.
“From 3,146 people in 2022, the number jumped to 8,422 in 2023, then 12,612 in 2024, increased to 14,142 in 2025, and rose again to 16,063 customers in the first quarter of 2026.”
Anne explained that Pegaden Baru Station had previously not served long-distance train passenger boarding and alighting, but it is now back as part of community activities.
“We see the growing enthusiasm of the public,” said Anne.
“Pegaden Baru is once again used as a departure and arrival point, in line with the increasingly diverse travel needs.”
Closer access is changing the way the public plans journeys. Residents who previously had to go to Haurgeulis Station or Bandung City now have a departure point closer to their own area.
