Tito Reports on Road and Education Sector Recovery Following Sumatra Disaster
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Chairman of the Task Force for Accelerated Rehabilitation and Reconstruction following the Sumatra Disaster, Tito Karnavian, confirmed that community mobility and logistics in Sumatra have been restored, though some areas still rely on temporary bridges.
“National road access is fully restored. All national bridges are operational,” Tito said during a press conference at the Senayan Parliamentary Complex in Jakarta on Monday, 25 May 2026.
He added that national bridges are functioning, albeit temporarily, with some using Bailey bridges, pioneer bridges, Armco bridges, or suspension bridges, all functional for mobility. Some regional bridges remain unrepaired.
Schooling has resumed in their respective school buildings, though a small number still use temporary facilities due to red zones.
“Learning activities are proceeding, but out of 4,922 schools, some remain in tents, particularly in red zones requiring relocation. We are currently discussing preparations for relocation sites,” he said.
Finally, Tito reported positive progress on handling displaced persons. Disaster-affected residents across Sumatra’s provinces have been gradually moved from emergency tents to Temporary Housing (Huntara).
“These positive developments include those already in Huntara. Most are in West Sumatra, North Sumatra, and Aceh — specifically Aceh Tamiang Regency, where residents previously in tents have now been relocated to Huntara under BNPB,” Tito said.
