Takbiran and Nyepi Come Close in Timing, Minister Says Restrictions from 6–9 p.m. Without a Sound System
Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar briefed President Prabowo Subianto on preparations ahead of Eid al-Fitr, including potential friction arising from Nyepi Day in Bali. Nasaruddin acknowledged the moment requires special arrangements given Nyepi’s demand for total silence, while takbiran on the night is traditionally associated with the recitation of takbir and communal activity.
‘I’m also reporting that preparations for Eid are underway because March 19 is Nyepi Day. Nyepi requires no loud noises, no vehicles and so on, even though our friends will be performing takbir that night,’ he told reporters at the Presidential Palace on Wednesday (4 March).
He said the government has coordinated with local governments and Bali community leaders to find common ground. The result is that takbiran will be allowed with restrictions so as not to disrupt Nyepi.
‘We have reported to the President that there is a consensus with the local government and Bali community leaders that takbir does not conflict with Nyepi, but the condition is that Nyepi proceeds and takbir also proceeds, but without a sound system and the timing is limited from 6 to 9 p.m.’
Besides Nyepi, Nasaruddin also touched on the possibility of a different determination of Eid al-Fitr this year. He stressed that such differences are not new and will be decided through the government’s isbat session.
‘Eid al-Fitr’s date difference is something we accept as normal in Indonesia. We will see when the isbat session determines exactly when Eid will come,’ Nasaruddin said.
