Social Minister: Tradition of Mutual Respect Creates Harmony During Multi-Faith Holy Days
Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Social Minister Saifullah Yusuf has expressed confidence that the tradition of communal unity and mutual respect amongst Indonesian society is key to achieving peace when several major religious celebrations take place in close succession, such as Nyepi, Eid al-Fitr, and Easter this year.
“The proximity of religious celebrations actually becomes an opportunity to strengthen attitudes of mutual respect between faith communities in Indonesia,” Saifullah said when met in Jakarta on Friday.
The habit of mutual respect has become part of the nation’s character, passed down through generations—not only for Muslims, but for all religions.
“This is our communal spirit. We can respect one another because we already have this tradition,” said Saifullah.
He added that the diversity of religious celebrations such as Nyepi, Eid al-Fitr, and other major holy days demonstrates Indonesia’s cultural richness and tolerance, which form the nation’s identity.
Therefore, the figure, who is also a prominent member of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), called on society to continue upholding attitudes of mutual respect, understanding, and compassion towards one another to maintain a peaceful atmosphere during these religious celebrations.
“The spirit of communal unity and tolerance that has developed within society can continue to be nurtured, so that religious celebrations can take place safely, comfortably, and peacefully,” he said.
