Sidewalk vendors in Binjai

Sidewalk vendors in Binjai

From Merdeka

At a discussion to commemorate 75 years of TB Simatupang in Jakarta on Jan. 31, 1995, many participants deplored the involvement of the Armed Forces in raids to clear out sidewalk vendors to the benefit of entrepreneurs or certain officials.

This mostly happens in Jakarta. In Binjai, North Sumatra, the police and Armed Forces raided sidewalk vendors' stalls, destroying equipment like tables, carts etc. in Pajak Tavip complex (Jan. 17, 1995) at night, because the vendors stubbornly refused to occupy the permanent kiosks made available to them inside the Pajak Tavip market. According to the vendors, the kiosks are too expensive for them.

The sidewalk vendors have occupied the present site since they were moved from other locations (Jl. Sudirman, Veteran, Bangkatan) over ten years ago. If the price of the kiosks were reasonable they would surely quite willingly move into them at the Pajak Tavip market.
