Railway system gets new cars

PURWOREJO, Central Java: Five train cars will provide a new
service to the railroad line between Purworejo and Jakarta, an
official here has said.

The head of the state-owned railway company Perumka, Soemino
Ekosaputro, said yesterday that the new cars had been brought
into operation because the station's restoration has been
completed after 20 years of being out of operation.

The cars will join the Sawunggalih Utama II series, that
depart at 7 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. from Kutoarjo, a nearby town.

The head of Purwokerto Office of Perumka, Singgih Abadi, said
that the service aims to anticipate the increased number of
passengers during the coming Idul Fitri post-fasting holidays.

He told Antara that the station restoration cost Rp 720
million (US$308,500).

Singgih said that the government had given the development of
the railroad system in Java top priority because of the density
of its population. (16)
