Prize parking system opposed
JAKARTA (JP): City Secretary Harun Al Rasyid said over the
weekend that the city administration did not favor the prize
parking system proposed by private companies as a means of
improving parking in the city.
"The city administration wants to cooperate with the private
companies in the parking business, but not under the prize
system," he said.
Introducing the prize system would only lead the public to
gamble, as in the case of the recently-banned SDSB (Philanthropic
donation with prizes) system, he said.
The proposal came from PT Ikabina Karya Sukses and three
other companies. The idea behind the proposed prize system is
that of encouraging motorists to insist on getting receipts from
parking attendants, thereby making it easier for the authorities
to monitor the revenues collected from parking.
Ikabina reportedly offered to contribute Rp 25.9 billion of
the parking fees it collected each year to the administration.
That amount is greater than the total revenue collected by the
city-owned parking agency, BP Parkir, during the 1994/1995 fiscal
year, which ended on March 31. BP Parkir collected Rp 14.6
billion. (31)
