Polri Discusses Legal Challenges in the AI Era, Warns of Potential Malicious Intent in AI Use
Polri discussed the rapid development of information technology. Polri warned of the potential for malicious intent in the use of Artificial Intelligence or AI.
This was explained during the public dialogue ‘Legal Challenges in the Artificial Intelligence Era’ held today at the Grandkemang Hotel in South Jakarta on Tuesday (7/4/2026). The dialogue involved cross-sector participants, including Bareskrim Polri, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, and professionals using artificial intelligence (AI).
“Every aspect of technological advancement surely has its dark side. The existing progress enables various parties to have malicious intentions, with the scale, speed, and complexity unlike in the conventional era,” said Polri’s Head of Public Relations Division, Inspector General Jhonny Edison Isir, in his opening remarks.
Jhonny also discussed notes from the National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN), which indicate millions of cyber traffic categorised as cybercrime. These crimes include phishing, malware, and AI-based data manipulation.
He reminded the public not to be deceived by deepfake technology. Jhonny explained the dangers of deepfakes.
“If we are not smart, we will be deceived; there is deepfake. It seems as if this person is speaking. If the person, the figure, is an influential figure, but the substance being discussed is not that, we can imagine what the impact would be,” he said.
Jhonny reminded Polri personnel to respond proactively to threats from the misuse of AI. He also invited all parties to collaborate in ensuring a healthy cyber space.
“In this context, we in Polri are required to respond proactively, quickly, and accurately to every development in information and communication technology, not just Artificial Intelligence, especially if it becomes integrated,” he said.
“A healthy digital space security is something that is very important and requires collaboration; it cannot be ensured by one element alone that this digital or cyber space is healthy,” he added.
