Officers jailed for bribes
SINGAPORE (AFP): Five Singaporean immigration officers have
been jailed for taking bribes from Malaysian-operated syndicates
to make it easier for Indonesians to enter the city state, a
report said yesterday.
The officers, on duty at the Malaysia-Singapore border
checkpoint at Woodlands, were given jail sentences of up to two-
and-a-half years each.
Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore island are linked by a
causeway.
The officers were also ordered to pay a penalty equal to the
amount they received in bribes totaling S$14,000 (US$10,000),
according to the Straits Times daily.
