National Police Chief Apologises for Instances of Police Officers Undermining Public Justice
The National Police Chief, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, has expressed his apologies to the public for instances where police officers have acted in ways that undermine public justice.
This was conveyed by the National Police Chief during an iftar event and donation to orphans together with members of the press at the Rupatama Polri Building, South Jakarta, on Tuesday (24/2).
In his speech, Sigit acknowledged that all actions of Polri members, whether intentional or not, will always be under public scrutiny.
“On this occasion, I would like to express my apologies if, in our daily activities, there may be actions by our members that, whether realised or not, undermine public justice,” he said.
Sigit affirmed that this apology is accompanied by a continued commitment to internal reform. He promised that they will not tolerate any members who are proven to have committed legal violations or acted in a way that offends the public.
“We promise that for actions that undermine public justice, especially those that constitute violations, we will not hesitate to take firm action to protect our beloved institution,” he emphasised.
He stated that this is the commitment of the Polri institution to the public and the press, which also serves as a supervisory partner.
On the other hand, he also highlighted the important role of the media in voicing public aspirations. Therefore, he has instructed all ranks to quickly respond to any complaints that arise in the public sphere.
“No matter how small the voice from our friends, it is a cry from the community, a cry from the public, a complaint from the community, an aspiration from the public, which we must address with quick and responsive action,” he said.
Sigit affirmed that Polri is always open to criticism and evaluation in order to maintain its mandate in maintaining security and public order (Harkamtibmas) in the face of a global situation full of uncertainty.
“We are always ready to receive input, receive criticism and evaluation,” he concluded.
