The Central Leadership of Muhammadiyah urges all cadres at every level of the organisation to implement a culture of frugal living in addressing the current national and global economic situation.

This appeal is contained in circular letter Number 5/EDR/1.0/B/2026 on the Call for Efficiency and a Culture of Frugal Living, dated 21 April 2026, signed by the General Chairman of the Muhammadiyah Central Leadership, Haedar Nashir, and Secretary Muhammad Sayuti.

“The Muhammadiyah Central Leadership urges all elements of the organisation to consistently apply principles of prudence and efficiency in budget management, conducting activities, and daily life,” states the explanation in the circular, as seen by Tempo on the Instagram account @lensamu on Saturday, 9 May 2026.

There are eight main points conveyed by the Muhammadiyah Central Leadership to all elements of the organisation in this savings circular. The points are as follows:

  1. Prioritising efficiency in budget spending and avoiding non-urgent expenditures;

  2. Prioritising strategic programmes and activities with direct impact, and reducing unnecessary ceremonial activities;

  3. Optimising the use of available resources effectively and responsibly;

  4. Reducing regional-national events and high-cost direct visits that can be replaced with coordination meetings or online activities;

  5. Limiting the frequency of overseas visits, especially for non-priority activities, and not involving parties without direct interests, while considering budget efficiency principles;

  6. Saving water, electricity, and energy in every office, building, and room. As an alternative, electricity savings can begin with the use of solar panels;

  7. Strengthening a culture of sufficient, healthy, clean, and productive living;

  8. Practising the Guidelines for the Islamic Life of Muhammadiyah Citizens (PHIWM) and the Treatise on Progressive Islam in all aspects of activities.

“These steps are expected to increase savings, strengthen independence, and maintain the stability and continuity of the Muhammadiyah organisation,” states the closing section of the Muhammadiyah Central Leadership circular.
