Jakarta - The Ministry of National Development Planning (PPN)/National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) is advocating for the strengthening of responsible, educational, honest, objective, and healthy media industry journalism (known locally as “bejos”).

The announcement was made by Senior Planner Yunes Herawati from the Ideology, Nationalism, Politics, and Democracy Directorate (IKPD) of the Ministry of PPN/Bappenas whilst presenting the national development plan for the press covering the 2025-2029 period at the Press Council Building in Jakarta on Friday.

“From our IKPD Directorate, we are communicating that during 2025-2029 we are promoting the strengthening of a responsible, educational, honest, objective, and healthy media industry,” Yunes said.

She also noted that plans for press strengthening are enshrined in Law Number 59 of 2024 concerning the National Long-Term Development Plan 2025-2045.

“We have also conveyed that the strengthening of the press in this national development planning is outlined in Law Number 59 of 2024 regarding the National Long-Term Development Plan 2025-2045,” she stated.

Regarding press and media strengthening, Yunes highlighted that the Ministry of PPN recommends utilising artificial intelligence (AI) platforms in journalism in accordance with healthy industry standards.

“One aspect of our recommendations concerning healthy media and press is in the technology sphere, recommending the use of digital technology and AI to strengthen the media and press,” she noted.

According to her, AI and the transformation of public spaces have become determinants of information visibility and promise economic benefits for media outlets.

“The era of AI and transformation of the public sphere has become a key determinant of public information visibility. Through AI and the transformation of the public sphere, this creates economic capital opportunities for leading media organisations,” she explained.

Based on this reasoning, the Ministry of PPN believes that AI utilisation is not necessarily harmful but can provide positive potential in media development to ensure better quality of life for citizens in the future.

To facilitate AI platform implementation, the Ministry of PPN has emphasised that regulations governing AI use are in place, as outlined in Circular Number 9 of 2023 on Artificial Intelligence Ethics and Press Council Regulation Number 1 of 2025 on Guidelines for Artificial Intelligence Use.

“There are several regulations regarding AI implementation that have been developed by the government, including through the Ministry of Communication and Digital Technology’s Circular Number 9 of 2023 on Artificial Intelligence Ethics issued in December 2023,” Yunes stated.
