Latest Updates on Pertamina Ship in Strait of Hormuz: Still Detained, Government Continues Lobbying Iran
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu), continues to strive for two Pertamina-owned oil tanker ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz amid the ceasefire between the United States (US) and Iran.
“The main point is that we are endeavouring for the Pertamina ships to cross the Strait of Hormuz,” said Spokesperson for the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Vahd Nabyl, during a press conference held at the Ministry’s office in Central Jakarta on Wednesday (8/4/2026).
The two Pertamina ships detained in the Strait of Hormuz are the Pertamina Pride and MT Gamsunoro.
“There are several rather technical matters that are indeed being followed up to ensure safety for crossing from there. This includes, among others, matters such as insurance and crew readiness,” he said.
Furthermore, the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran has coordinated with the Iranian government as well as the Iranian Embassy to Indonesia in Jakarta.
“This includes actions by the Foreign Minister in meetings with the Iranian Ambassador and also by our Ambassador in Tehran with authorities in Iran,” he explained.
Nabyl emphasised that the government wants freedom of navigation to be respected while still complying with international law.
“For two weeks, a safe route through the Strait of Hormuz has been opened through coordination with the Iranian Armed Forces and taking into account technical limitations,” wrote Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on X, quoted from AFP.
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, in a separate statement, said that negotiations are scheduled to take place for two weeks but can be extended by mutual agreement of the parties.
On another occasion, Trump stated that the agreement to open the Strait of Hormuz was reached in the final minutes of the deadline he had given to Iran.
“This will be a two-sided ceasefire!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
“The reason is that we have met and exceeded all military objectives, and we are already far along in reaching a definitive agreement on long-term peace with Iran, and peace in the Middle East,” he added.
