Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) views the revelation of cases of electronic-based sexual violence in higher education environments as showing that the violence occurring today is becoming increasingly difficult to recognise and normalised.

“Over the past few days, we have been reminded again by various incidents that have emerged in the public sphere. Suspected electronic-based sexual violence in educational settings. It is like drawing back the curtain, revealing that violence does not change form, but is also becoming more subtle, harder to recognise, and therefore easier to normalise,” said Komnas Perempuan Chairwoman Maria Ulfah Anshor at the Public Consultation for Komnas Perempuan’s 2025 Annual Report in Jakarta on Monday.

The commission regrets the view that violence against women wrapped in jokes is considered something normal and not worth addressing.

She stated that Komnas Perempuan will continue to monitor the handling of sexual violence cases in higher education areas, including the latest case at the Faculty of Law at the University of Indonesia that has recently come to light.

Meanwhile, on a different occasion, Minister for Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Arifah Fauzi stated the importance of strengthening public understanding of various forms of sexual violence, including non-physical ones such as verbal and digital.

Minister Arifah Fauzi highlighted that there are still misguided perceptions that consider violence as normal, making education a fundamental step in prevention.
