Komdigi Records 2,000 Reports of Violence Against Women in Digital Space Each Year
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) has revealed that cases of violence against women in the digital space have been steadily increasing in recent years.
“Cases of violence against women in the digital space have been steadily increasing in recent years, with an average of around 2,000 reports each year,” said Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid in her statement on Thursday (16/4/2026).
Meutya stated that the most dominant form of violence is sexual violence that is not physical, but rather non-physical or online.
“In the latest study (on online sexual violence), it reached more than 1,600 cases,” she explained.
Meutya stressed that the digital space must not become a place that allows violence to occur without response.
“When the crime happens on the platform, that is their home. That means those handling it inside are them. We cannot enter unless with certain authority,” she said.
Meutya added that the government has the authority to impose sanctions if content or activities on the platform are deemed to endanger the public.
Meanwhile, in the latest case, a sexual harassment incident in the digital space came to light following the contents of a conversation group with 16 members from the Faculty of Law at the University of Indonesia (UI).
The conversation group was known to have originated from a boarding house group named “Basecamp Puri Asih,” created in 2024.
However, in its development, the group turned into a conversation space containing harassment-laden content.
From the investigation, the number of victims in this case reached 27 people, consisting of 20 female students and seven lecturers.
All victims are from the Faculty of Law at UI.
