Iran Claims War Caused Losses of Rp 4.629 Quadrillion, Hundreds of Thousands of Jobs Lost
JAKARTA — The economic impact of the armed conflict between Iran and the United States (US) and its allies is beginning to emerge on a massive scale. The Iranian government estimates that the economic losses from the war, which lasted around 40 days, amount to $270 billion, equivalent to approximately Rp 4.629 quadrillion (assuming an exchange rate of Rp 17,145 per US dollar). Quoting Anadolu Agency on Thursday (16/4/2026), the Iranian government spokesperson, Fatemeh Mohajerani, stated that this figure is still an initial estimate. In its statement, the Iranian government emphasised that these losses must be included in the discussions of the ongoing international negotiations. This demand for compensation arises amid plans for new talks with the US following the easing of the conflict. War damage has not only affected military facilities but has also spread to civilian infrastructure and the economy. Damage to the energy sector is one of the most significant, given that Iran is one of the major oil and gas producers in the region. Disruptions to these facilities have not only impacted domestic production but have also hindered exports, which have long been a primary source of national revenue. In addition, various industrial facilities and public infrastructure have also suffered damage. The Iranian government states that post-war economic recovery is estimated to take years, due to the extensive scale of the damage and limited access to technology and foreign investment. The economic impact of the war is also reflected in the labour market conditions. Reports from DW indicate that the conflict has caused the loss of hundreds of thousands of jobs in Iran.
