Ipunk lies about police summons: Maj. Gen. Dibyo

JAKARTA (JP): City Police Chief Maj. Gen. Dibyo Widodo said on Saturday that Ruyalti, the ex-girlfriend of Harnoko Dewantono, alias Oki, the main suspect in the Los Angeles triple murder, has been questioned by police.

During the questioning session, Ruyalti, known as Ipunk, 22, admitted that she bought a wooden box on the orders of Oki, 30, when they were still living in Los Angeles between 1987 and 1991, but she did not know what the box was for.

The newly-installed city police chief made the remarks to deny the statements made a day earlier by Ruyalti, who claimed that, so far, she has never been summoned, nor questioned, by city police.

"Police have questioned Ipunk. This can be proven from a prepared dossier," Dibyo told reporters on Saturday.

"Ipunk admitted that she followed the order, as was stated in the dossier," the city police chief said. "But, it was a wooden box, not plastic bag as reported by the media," he added.

Dibyo gave no further comment on whether or not it was a coffin.

Ipunk told a press meeting on Friday that she has never been questioned by city police in connection with the murder case. "Even through a phone call," she said.

Ipunk, a model, had an intimate relationship between 1987-1991 with Oki, the prime suspect in the killing of his business partner of Indian origin, Suresh Mirchandani, his Indonesian female friend, Gina Sutan Aswar, and his own brother, Tri Harto Darmawan, known as Eri.

Suresh was believed to have been killed in 1991, while Gina and Eri in the following years.

Dibyo said that Ipunk was questioned in order to find out her alleged role in helping the main suspect in the killing (of Suresh).

In the dossier, Ipunk had already asked Oki about the objective of buying the wooden case. She quoted Oki as replying that the box would be used for his cloth and goods, Dibyo said.

The city police chief told reporters that the investigation of the murder case is nearly completed.

"We're just waiting for the arrival of our team from Los Angeles (today) before handing over the dossiers to the prosecutors office," he said.

Since the identification of the three dead bodies by the Los Angeles police last December, Oki has been listed as a wanted criminal by the Los Angeles Police Department.

He was apprehended in Central Jakarta on Jan. 7 in connection with an alleged passport forgery case and has since been questioned for his alleged role in the triple murder.

A number of Jakarta senior police detectives have been in Los Angeles to collect information and material evidence since early last week.

Several media publications have reported that Oki might also have played a certain role in an international drug syndicate.

A reliable source revealed that he allegedly had something to do with the distribution of a certain type of drug linking Latin America, the United States, the Netherlands and Indonesia.

But Jakarta police officers are still in doubt about the information.

"We only know that Oki is a consumer of cocaine, which he got from someone in Mexico," a senior officer at the Crime Investigation Directorate told The Jakarta Post on Saturday.

The officer, who asked not to be named, said that he will try to question Oki for his alleged role in such a syndicate.

"During several questioning sessions, he admitted that he was only a user, not a member of any syndicate," he said.

Another officer said that the name Oki has never been listed with the city police as a member of any drug syndicate.

According to city police spokesman Lt. Col. Bambang Haryoko, who met the suspect on Friday, Oki is still in good health.

"He has been working, helping us file data on our computer system of prisoners currently in police custody," Bambang said. "I think it's better for him rather than doing nothing." (bsr)
