Initial Chronology of the East Bekasi Station Accident, Ministry of Transportation: KRL Train 5181 Hit by Car
The Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) has explained the initial chronology of the accident involving the Argo Bromo Anggrek train and a KRL at East Bekasi Station on Monday (27/4/2026). The incident began when a KRL on the Bekasi-Cikarang route was obstructed by a car at the JPL 85 level crossing. “Based on the initial chronology, the accident started when the KRL trainset on the Bekasi–Cikarang route was hit by a car at the JPL 85 level crossing,” said Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi, quoted from Antara on Tuesday (28/4/2026). Traffic officers stopped another KRL train, coded PLB 5568, heading to Cikarang at East Bekasi Station due to the incident affecting 5181. However, the Argo Bromo Anggrek train (KA 4) on the Jakarta-Surabaya route did not stop fully and collided with the rear carriages of PLB 5568, which was stationary on the platform at East Bekasi Station. The accident resulted in 14 people killed and 84 others injured. Munir, who experienced the collision on the train he was riding, described how it was hit from behind by the Argo Bromo Anggrek. “Basically, it was hit from the rear; the driver’s car of the long-distance train penetrated the carriage,” said Munir, quoted from Kompas.com on Monday (27/4/2026). “It sounded like a bomb because of how fast it was,” said Hendri. He noted that KRL PLB 5568 arrived at East Bekasi Station at 20:30 WIB. “Actually, this train overtook my train from East Bekasi about 15 minutes earlier. Then Argo Bromo hit the rear carriage where women were seated, penetrating somewhat inside. So we don’t know the exact number of victims yet; they are being evacuated,” he said.
