House of Representatives Urges Police Chief to Be Transparent in Exposing Drug-Linked Officers: Don't Cover It Up!
Jakarta, VIVA – Member of the House of Representatives’ Commission III, Hinca Panjaitan, has urged National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo to be transparent and refrain from covering up drug cases involving members of the Indonesian National Police (Polri).
The warning follows a string of shocking revelations regarding the involvement of law enforcement officers in the distribution of illegal narcotics across several regions.
Hinca highlighted a number of cases that have recently come to light, ranging from West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) to Toraja, which demonstrate that certain police officers have failed to carry out their duties properly.
“I urge the Police Chief to take swift action by placing them under special assignment, investigating them, and bringing them to justice in accordance with the applicable mechanisms. I believe there should be no more leniency,” Hinca told reporters at the Parliamentary Complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta, as quoted on Tuesday, 24 February 2026.
According to Hinca, the conduct of police officers who abuse their authority for drug-related interests has caused great public anxiety. He assessed this as a cultural problem that must be urgently addressed within the police force.
“The attitude and behaviour of police officers who abuse their authority is deeply troubling. We from Commission III are asking the Police Chief to explain to the public in full clarity what is actually happening. There is no need to cover things up, because this is our shared commitment,” the Democrat Party politician continued.
Hinca stressed that anyone who abuses their position, particularly in connection with cases they are handling, must not be shown any mercy.
“I urge the Police Chief to personally intervene and deal with all subordinates who have violated the applicable regulations,” he said.
Furthermore, Hinca called for behavioural reform within the police force to prevent public trust from eroding further. He expressed hope that the Police Chief would genuinely demonstrate his commitment to eradicating drugs without discrimination, even if the perpetrators are his own subordinates.
“Anyone who abuses their authority and position, especially regarding cases they are handling, particularly drugs — there shall be no mercy,” Hinca asserted.
It was previously reported that the Head of the Narcotics Unit of North Toraja Police, Adjunct Commissioner of Police Arifan Efendi, along with the Deputy Head of the Narcotics Unit, Adjunct Inspector Nasrul, were detained by a special team from the South Sulawesi Provincial Police on suspicion of involvement in drug trafficking in their jurisdiction.
