Deputy Chairman of House Commission I of the Republic of Indonesia, Sukamta, has requested that the United Nations (UN) press Israel to take responsibility for the deaths of three TNI soldiers in the Peacekeeping Mission in Lebanon. Sukamta hopes the government can encourage the UN to take a firm stance.

“The UN must take responsibility, including by urging Israel to be accountable for their actions that led to the deaths of three Indonesian soldiers. The government needs to push the UN to be firm,” said Sukamta to reporters on Tuesday (7/4/2026).

He noted that the attacks carried out by Israel have been repeated, resulting in three other TNI soldiers being injured. Sukamta requested that the TNI and the government ensure the safety of the soldiers there.

“This repeated incident cannot be left unchecked. We also ask the TNI and the Government to ensure the safety of the injured soldiers,” he said.

This PKS legislator assessed that Indonesia’s position holds strategic weight. Because, he continued, Indonesia is not only a country that has lost personnel but also one of the largest contributors of peacekeeping troops worldwide.

“This means the incident concerns two layers of interests at once, namely protection for national soldiers and the consistency of international security governance for all peacekeeping missions,” stated Sukamta.

“If the investigation does not yield accountable accountability, the precedent formed will weaken the position of peacekeeping forces in various conflict areas in the future,” he added.

House Commission I hopes that the push for investigation does not stop at tracing the technical causes of death. He emphasised the need for an evaluation of compliance by all conflicting parties with the principles of UN force protection as regulated in international humanitarian law.

“In the context of increasing military operations in southern Lebanon, the presence of UNIFIL personnel should be within a protection perimeter recognised by all parties,” he said.

Sukamta urged the government to intensify diplomacy with Security Council member states. He also called for an internal evaluation of personnel protection in peacekeeping forces.

“The government needs to utilise all available diplomatic channels, both through Indonesia’s permanent representation at the UN, bilateral forums, and intensive communication with Security Council member countries, to ensure the investigation proceeds independently, transparently, and results in an official position acceptable to the international public,” explained Sukamta.

“It is also important to have an internal evaluation of the Indonesian personnel protection system in active conflict areas. Not in the sense of reducing Indonesia’s commitment to world peacekeeping missions,” he added.

Sukamta views the current situation in Lebanon as showing that the line between monitoring zones and threat zones is becoming increasingly thin. Adaptation of security procedures, he said, must be a serious concern for the government together with the TNI.

“This means ensuring that Indonesian soldiers serving as peacekeepers receive maximum security and safety guarantees,” he said.

Previously, President Prabowo farewelled the remains of the three soldiers who fell in the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The three fallen soldiers were Captain Inf Zulmi Aditya Iskandar, Staff Sergeant Muhammad Nur Ikhwan, and Private First Class Farizal Rhomadhon.
