Home Affairs Minister Appreciates Ministry of PKP's House Renovation Programme in Papua
Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Muhammad Tito Karnavian has appreciated the Unfit Housing (RTLH) house renovation programme in the Papua region initiated by the Ministry of Housing and Settlement Areas (PKP). He stated that housing problems in Papua remain quite high because many residents do not yet have homes or live in unfit housing. “Minister PKP Maruarar Sirait has an extraordinary programme, including subsidised housing, house renovations, and others. Even for house renovations, at least 21,000 [houses in the Papua region] are allocated,” Tito said in a written statement received by Kompas.com on Wednesday (15/4/2026). Tito conveyed this after the Preparatory Meeting for the Construction and Rehabilitation of Decent Housing in 6 Provinces in the Papua Region, at the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri) Central Office, Jakarta, on Wednesday. He said there has never been a housing programme as massive as the one currently being carried out by the Ministry of PKP. However, according to Tito, the programme would be difficult to implement if relying solely on Regional Revenue and Expenditure Budgets (APBD). This is because the Papua region has six provinces and 42 regencies/cities. “If we do it casually, 21,000 divided by 42 regencies/cities is about 500. How much cost must each regency/city in the area allocate from their APBD?” he explained. Nevertheless, Tito expressed gratitude because the programme is directly handled by the Minister of PKP, so it can run well. “We convey high appreciation to Minister Maruarar for the housing programme, including house renovations, among others with a significant number in Papua, Tanah Papua,” he clarified. “There are also slum areas in three [locations] being improved, namely in the main Papua, in Jayapura, South Papua, and Sorong. So the programme is massive,” he added. Also present at the forum were Deputy Minister of Home Affairs (Wamendagri) Ribka Haluk, Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, executives from the Committee for Accelerating Special Autonomy Development in Papua, as well as governors or representatives from the Papua region.
