Governor Sherly Discusses South Korean Investment in North Maluku
The North Maluku Provincial Government is strengthening strategic cooperation with the Republic of Korea through a meeting between North Maluku Governor Sherly Tjoanda and the Republic of Korea’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Y.M. Yoon Soon-gu, at the Republic of Korea Embassy Office in Jakarta on Friday, 17 April 2026.
The meeting discussed several priority sectors deemed potential for joint development, ranging from mining, energy, fisheries, to tourism. All cooperation agendas are directed towards the principles of sustainable development, value addition, and community welfare.
In the discussion, investments by the South Korean company POSCO, which is currently involved in developing the nickel processing industry through a joint venture scheme in the Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park area, were also addressed. The presence of foreign investment is considered important for promoting the downstreaming of natural resources in North Maluku.
The North Maluku Provincial Government emphasised its commitment to maintaining a healthy, transparent, and accountable investment climate. This commitment includes ensuring business licensing certainty, environmental protection, and fulfilment of corporate responsibilities to the community and region in accordance with applicable regulations.
Governor Sherly stressed that every investment entering North Maluku must be able to provide tangible impacts for regional development, particularly in creating jobs, enhancing human resource capacity, and strengthening the value added of local commodities.
“The North Maluku Provincial Government encourages healthy and fair partnerships with all investors, including those from the Republic of Korea, by ensuring all activities run in accordance with regulations and provide optimal benefits for the community and region,” said the Governor.
In addition, the North Maluku Provincial Government also highlighted the importance of synergy between the central government, local government, and business actors to maintain investment stability while ensuring industrial practices are carried out responsibly, both socially and environmentally.
This meeting serves as a strong signal of the commitment of both parties to strengthen mutually beneficial bilateral relations, while affirming North Maluku’s position as one of the strategic industrial growth centres based on natural resources in Indonesia.
