The Gerindra faction in Serang Regency’s local parliament (DPRD) has drawn attention to the region’s longstanding reputation as merely a transit area for travellers heading to Anyer and Merak. The party is urging the Serang Regency Government to develop new tourist attractions to make the area a destination in its own right.

“For too long, Serang Regency has only served as a place people pass through. People head to Anyer or Merak but don’t stop here. This is something we need to start changing,” said Ahmad Muhibbin, chairman of the Gerindra Party faction in Serang Regency’s DPRD, on Thursday (19 February 2026).

He said the regency possesses significant potential that has yet to be managed to its fullest, resulting in many visitors from outside the area simply passing through without stopping.

According to Muhibbin, regional development should not focus solely on infrastructure but must also create public spaces and destination zones. Such development is considered capable of attracting community activity whilst simultaneously driving the local economy.

“In the context of formulating development programmes in Serang Regency, the time has come for policy orientation to be directed towards developing areas that support religious sites, tourism, and historical sites,” he said.

One area identified as having significant potential is the Pamarayan Dam zone in Pamarayan District. The development of pedestrian facilities, green open spaces, and family-friendly amenities could transform the area into an affordable community tourism destination.

Additionally, the Tanara area is noted for its strength as a religious and historical destination. Meanwhile, Anyer has the potential to be developed in a more modern fashion so that it is not merely a seasonal tourist spot.

“Tourism zone development will generate multiplier effects for the local economy, particularly for MSME operators and small traders,” said Muhibbin.

“When public spaces are vibrant and areas are well-organised, communities gain business opportunities. Economic activity will grow from culinary ventures, handicrafts, through to creative services,” he added.

According to Muhibbin, with careful planning and cross-stakeholder collaboration, Serang Regency has the opportunity to transform from a mere transit area into a new destination in Banten.

“The target is no longer just to be passed through, but to become a destination,” he concluded.
